Game Fun
this week i got to learn about gamification and how fun relates to it. Fun is a byproduct of a good design but it is not always included in game design. There is also different types of fun. Fun in video games can be defined as 'pleasurable engagement'. There's 8 types of fun:
1. Sensation - game as sense-pleasure
2.Fantasy - make-believe
3.Narritive - drama
4.Challenge - obstacle course
5. Fellowship - social framework
6.Discovery - uncharted territory
7.Expression - self-discovery
8.Submission - pastime
This also relates to a previous topic of MDA (Mechanics, dynamics & aesthetics) and their counterparts: Rules, System & Fun.
There are 4 keys to fun according to Nicole Lazzaro:
1. Easy Fun - curiosity from exploration, role play and creativity ie dragon age origins
2.Hard Fun - Epic win, Achievement from a difficult goal ie DMC5
3. People Fun - Amusement from competition and cooperation ie call of duty and its many many games
4. Serious Fun - Excitement from changing the character and their world ie dragon age inquisition
All these reasons create more emotions for the players and creates a different experience for each individual. But that isn't the only structure out there for a good design to be fun. There are 5 groups of fun according to Marczewski: (a screenshot)
